The South Downs National Park is now a concrete reality, offering protection to this most beautiful area of England which yet lies so close to the Capital.
The district offers numerous attractions to visitors, particularly heritage destinations such as Petworth House, Uppark, The Weald & Downland Museum, Arundel Castle, Bignor Roman Villa & Fishbourne Roman Palace.
The historic estates of Cowdray Park and Goodwood provide much of the summer seasons entertainment and sport. Horse racing at Goodwood on arguably the most spectacularly sited course in England, as well as the two motorsport events, The Festival Of Speed and the Goodwood Revival Meeting.
Cowdray offers Polo, and the Cowdray Ruins have been recently been restored and opened to visitors.
The Black Horse is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with numerous walks and footpaths within easy reach. A footpath links Petworth with the garden of the Inn, across the stunning Shimmings Valley.
